Wii Sports
When you buy a Nintendo Wii you will also receive bundled with it a copy of the excellent Wii Sports game, which demonstrates the ease of use of the Wii Remote perfectly. The game brings you five fun sports to play at home either on your own or with friends or family.
The sports available are Tennis, Ten Pin Bowling, Baseball, Golf and Boxing, each of which is played using the same bodily actions you would use were you to be taking part in the sport for real.
Each of the sports is portrayed on screen using the players previously created Mii characters, so you can play the games as yourself, albeit a cartoon charicature version of yourself!
Tennis
Wii Sports Tennis allows you to play either singles or doubles matches against friend or against Wii controlled players. The best thing about Wii Sports Tennis is that you only have to concern yourself with hitting the ball back across the net by swinging the Wii Remote like a tennis racquet, timing your swing so that your Mii hits the ball as it flies past them. Your Mii will automatically run towards the ball, so all you have to do is concentrate on your volley.
Ten Pin Bowling
The Bowling game in Wii Sports lets you experience all the fun of Ten Pin Bowling without having to wear embarassingly coloured shoes! After setting your start position and aim on the lane using the direction pad control on the Wii Remote you bowl the ball by holding a button to represent your grip on the bowling ball, then swinging your arm backwards and forwards again, releasing the button to make your Mii release the ball on screen. If all goes well then the ball will roll down the lane, hopefully scattering the pins when it reaches the end.
Baseball
With Wii Sports Baseball you captain a team of Mii's made up of your own Mii and a mixture of others found on your console and ones which are generated by Wii Sports. Teams take it in turns to bat and pitch. When batting you hold the Wii Remote as though you were gripping the handle of a baseball bat, and then attempt to hit the ball as it is pitched at you. When pitching you throw the ball by swinging the Wii Remote overarm.
Golf
If a round of Golf is more your thing then Wii Sports is happy to oblige. As with the other games you hold the Wii Remote as if it were a golf club, pointing it down at the ground. You can then practice your swing, with the Wii displaying how hard you would hit the ball. Hit it too hard and it might veer off course. When ready to take your shot, swing the remote again whilst holding the A button. Great fun, and you don't have to worry about getting half way through and then getting rained on!
Boxing
Finally we have Wii Sports Boxing, which requires you to use both the Wii Remote and Nunchuk since you'll need to use both hands in order to box! Hit out quickly with either hand allows your on screen Mii to throw a punch at your opponent to bring down their energy levels. You can also attempt to block punches made by your opponent by holding the Wii Remote and Nunchuk vertically and tilting them left, right or backwards to make your Mii dance around the ring.
Bonus Modes
As well as just playing the different sports as they are intended to be played the Wii Sports game also provides some additional bonus modes where you can hone your skills in the different games with some fun challenges. For example, you can practice your Tennis shot whilst aiming at targets, or play a really fun mode in Bowling where you start off with just ten pins standing, but each ball you throw adds a further row of pins to the back of the pack, meaning you end up aiming down a comically wide lane with 100 pins sat at the bottom of it!
